Introduction:

Paracetamol (acetaminophen) is a widely used analgesic/antipyretic drug used to cure fever and mild pain. It is one of the most commonly used drug worldwide including it’s use by pregnant women. Recently the FDA has found a convincing correlation between its use in pregnant women and harmful neurological effects on the child including ADHD and AUTISM.

What Does Research Say?

“Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai have found that prenatal exposure to acetaminophen may increase the risk of neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), in children.” – Mountsinai

Researchers at Mount Sinai reviewed 46 studies including data from 100,000 individuals from different countries their findings question a common belief, and what was “common belief?” It’s that paracetamol (acetaminophen) was considered safe to use during pregnancy.

FDA's Initiative

The U.S Food and Drug Administration has initiated safety label change for drug products containing paracetamol(acetaminophen), suggesting it’s use in pregnancy is correlated to ADHD and autism in children.

How risky is paracetamol during pregnancy?

Uptil now there is no direct evidence showing it harmful effects, instead there is a correlation found among paracetamol use in pregnancy and it’s neurological effects on the child more reaserch is needed to prove it’s direct neurological effects. It’s best to use it only when needed and avoid overusing this drug.
